With the regimental number 109 Gordon Clarke, son of Malvern’s mayor A. E. Clarke, was one of the earliest men to join the AIF in 1914. He served with the 1st Divisional Signal Company at Gallipoli then Belgium and France. He was a motor cyclist carrying despatches along the front. He was killed in action 8 November 1917 and is buried in Reninghelst New Military Cemetery near Ypres, Belgium.
